The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM VII) Regional Office in Central Visayas welcomes more newly-appointed and designated Population Officers who come mainly from the province of Negros Oriental. To date, Region VII has a total of ninety (90) Population Officers representing the local government units (LGUs) from the Provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor and the tri-cities: Cebu, Mandaue and Lapulapu. The Population Officers who are oftentimes members of the medical profession – doctors, nurses or health workers – are now at the front line helping in preventing the spread of COVID 19 as they continue to coordinate with POPCOM VII on its 3-streamed programs on responsible parenthood and family planning (RPFP), adolescent health and development (AHD), and population development integration (POPDEV).
Now, in this time of the COVID 19 pandemic, as the whole world declares for states of health crisis or emergency, the local government units (LGUs) in Central Visayas are ever-challenged to manage their respective population of constituents with the Population Officers also in the front line. Region VII or Central Visayas has 4 provinces, 116 municipalities, and 16 cities (3 of which are highly urbanized cities administered independently from any province) with a total number of 3,003 barangays in the region. It is ideal to appoint or at least, designate Population Officers in the barangays as mandated by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
During the 1st Regional Population Management Conference (RPMC) held last March 5, 2020 at the Golden Peak Hotel, the Population Officers received three (3) memorandums, one of which was for them to gather data on teenage pregnancy (as this was the issue also considered of national social emergency).
